Iron-loaded transferrin (Tf) is detrimental whereas iron-free Tf confers protection against brain ischemia by modifying blood Tf saturation and subse…

2018

Despite transferrin being the main circulating carrier of iron in body fluids, and iron overload conditions being known to worsen stroke outcome through reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced damage, the contribution of blood transferrin saturation (TSAT) to stroke brain damage is unknown. The objective of this study was to obtain evidence on whether TSAT determines the impact of experimental ischemic stroke on brain damage and whether iron-free transferrin (apotransferrin, ATf)-induced reduction of TSAT is neuroprotective. We found that experimental ischemic stroke promoted an early extravasation of circulating iron-loaded transferrin (holotransferrin, HTf) to the ischemic brain parenchyma.…

Optical absorption of divalent metal tungstates: Correlation between the band-gap energy and the cation ionic radius

2008

We have carried out optical-absorption and reflectance measurements at room temperature in single crystals of AWO4 tungstates (A = Ba, Ca, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sr, and Zn). From the experimental results their band-gap energy has been determined to be 5.26 eV (BaWO4), 5.08 eV (SrWO4), 4.94 eV (CaWO4), 4.15 eV (CdWO4), 3.9-4.4 eV (ZnWO4), 3.8-4.2 eV (PbWO4), and 2.3 eV (CuWO4). The results are discussed in terms of the electronic structure of the studied tungstates. It has been found that those compounds where only the s electron states of the A2+ cation hybridize with the O 2p and W 5d states (e.g BaWO4) have larger band-gap energies than those where also p, d, and f states of the A2+ cation contribu…

Heptacoordinated MnIIin oxalate-based bimetallic 2D magnets: synthesis and characterisation of [Mn(L)6][Mn(CH3OH)MIII(ox)3]2(MIII= Cr, Rh; ox = oxala…

2006

Oxalate-based magnets have been known with several different crystallographic structures, from 1D to 3D, but with all of them based in metal ions with octahedral coordination. In this article we report a new bidimensional oxalate-bridged bimetallic magnet where the divalent metal appears heptacoordinated, which has strong effects in the structure and properties of this materials.

Divalent metal ion buffers with low pH-sensitivity

1973

Development of a biosensor for copper detection in aqueous solutions using an Anemonia sulcata recombinant GFP.

2014

Fluorescent proteins from marine organisms represent potential candidates for biosensor development. In this paper, we described the isolation of a native green fluorescent protein from Anemonia sulcata and the cloning and purification of its equivalent as a recombinant protein in Escherichia coli. Furthermore, the spectroscopic behaviours of the native and recombinant GFPs were investigated as a function of Cu2+, Cd2+, Pb 2+ and Ni2+ concentration. Our results suggest the high selectivity of both proteins at copper than the other metals and, for the recombinant protein, a great sensitivity at a very low concentration (0.1-1 μM). Moreover, starting from these data, using the combination of …

Phase Stability of Natural Ni0.75Mg0.22Ca0.03CO3 Gaspeite Mineral at High Pressure and Temperature

2020

[EN] Divalent metal carbonates play an important role in Earth's carbon cycle, but the effect of chemical substitution is still poorly known. In this work, we have studied the structural and vibrational properties of natural mineral gaspeite (Ni0.75Mg0.22Ca0.03CO3) under high pressure and temperature using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy in diamond-anvil cells. These experiments have been complemented by ab initio simulations. Synchrotron high-pressure XRD measurements at room temperature using He as the pressure transmitting medium have shown that the calcite-type structure is stable up to 23.3 GPa. A bulk modulus at zero pressure of B-0 = 105(2) GPa with B-0' …

Pseudopeptidic ligands: exploring the self-assembly of isophthaloylbisglycine (H2IBG) and divalent metal ions.

2012

We present a systematic study of the complexation of the new pseudopeptidic ligand isophthaloylbisglycine (H(2)IBG) with divalent metal ions of varying ionic radius. This work represents the initial employment of H(2)IBG in the coordination chemistry of alkaline earth, 3d transition, Zn(II) and Cd(II) metal elements. Infrared, NMR, thermal, magnetic, adsorption and theoretical studies of these compounds are also discussed.

Coamplexation of mercury(II) compounds by crown ethers in organic media

1991

Complexes between crown ethers having ring sizes of 15–24 atoms and 5 to 8 oxygens with HgX2 species (X = Cl, I, CN, SCN) have been prepared and studied. Interactions of the substituents X bound to mercury with groups or fragments in the crown compound are essential in determining the characteristics and stability of the complexes formed. Complexes with crowns of 18C6 ring sizes are the most favourable except for HgX2 compounds for which the size of X is larger than the macrocycle ring, as is the case for X = CF3.

Transition metal ion induced hydrogelation by amino-terpyridine ligands

2014

Hydrogelation behavior of a new class of terpyridine based metallogelators are explored. The gelation and the gel morphology was found to be critically dependent on divalent metal ions, anions and on subtle structural changes on the gelator molecule.

Surfactant self-assembling in the gas phase: bis(2-ethylhexyl)- sulfosuccinate divalent metal ion anionic aggregates

2012

RATIONALE: Investigation of fundamental aspects driving surfactant self-assembling and of the capability of including guest molecules or ions in their micellar aggregates is an exciting research field for theoretical and technological reasons. In this light, assembling and chelating properties of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOTNa) towards divalent metal ion chlorides have been investigated in the gas phase by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in negative ion mode, tandem mass spectrometry and energy-resolved mass spectrometry. METHODS:Water/methanol solutions of AOTNa and chloride salts of nickel, magnesium, calcium and manganese, with different AOTNa/metal salt ratios, …
